If Elvis Presley were alive, would he still be living at Graceland?
That’s the kind of question that may come up among fans as thousands from around the world descend on Memphis for “Elvis Week.”The huge, all-things-Elvis gathering is scheduled each year around the anniversary of the day the King died, Aug. 16, 1977. Some of the most important events of the tribute are staged at Graceland, the mansion built in 1939 that the rock ’n’ roll legend bought in 1957.
While “tacky” is just about the kindest thing critics say about Graceland’s interior, the outside has a somewhat stately charm with its neoclassical and colonial revival elements and bits of other architectural styles thrown in.
But the place is a whopping 17,552 square feet! Wouldn’t you think that a now 77-year-old Elvis might be pondering downsizing … simplifying … maybe entertaining less?
